Daily Purgatory Episode 1 of 132 · Canto I, verses 1-3

Per correr miglior acque alza le vele
omai la navicella del mio ingegno,
che lascia dietro a sé mar sì crudele;

"To sail for better waters now, the little boat
of my intellect raises up its sails - and yes,
leaves behind that cruel ocean."

This is the opening tercet of Purgatory, and it sets the tone for the second canticle of the Divine Comedy.

In the overall aspiration for Dante, which is to raise up people from misery to happiness, we have already been through the problems and dysfunction of vice in excruciating detail in Inferno. Now the time has come for solutions, both for individuals, and for cultures, societies and civilizations - even humanity at large.

Dante is elevating the sails on his intellect/ingenuity to explore the virtues and the Good, and using the "winds" to carry him forward on this journey. In one single line he is putting Inferno behind, and this tercet reorients the whole narrative: Purgatory and Paradiso are movements towards the Light, Truth and Virtue.
