We will now try to apply and double check our last reading<\/a> with the new anagogical method<\/a> and the four tools of discernment.<\/p>\n

The passage is the following:<\/p>\n

\u00abEcco di qua, ma fanno i passi radi\u00bb, <\/em>
\nmormorava il poeta, \u00abmolte genti: <\/em>
\nquesti ne \u2018nvieranno a li alti gradi\u00bb.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Li occhi miei ch\u2019a mirare eran contenti <\/em>
\nper veder novitadi ond\u2019e\u2019 son vaghi, <\/em>
\nvolgendosi ver\u2019 lui non furon lenti.<\/em><\/p>\n

Roughly:<\/p>\n

“Look from here, but they take slow steps<\/em>
\nmurmured the poet, “many people:<\/em>
\nthese will send us to the higher grades”<\/em><\/p>\n

“My eyes that were content in looking<\/em>
\nTo see new things of which they are eager,<\/em>
\nwere not slow to turn themselves towards him.”<\/em><\/p>\n

First<\/strong>, we know that this has to be about the soul, God, relationship, spiritual growth or the spiritual journey. This is always a given for the anagogical level – if it is really there.<\/p>\n

Then the four tools<\/strong>; first the literal: The poet Virgil tells the Pilgrim to look at many people who are taking small steps, from here. He further says they will send them higher up on the mountain, and the Pilgrim says that even as he was content with looking (presumably still at the carvings as that which was the last focus of his vision), his eyes are eager for new things, so he quickly turns his gaze towards Virgil. So literally, Virgil says: look from here towards the new, and the Pilgrim turns his eyes at once.<\/p>\n

Sequential reading: we have just discovered the overall spiritual process and nature of the spiritual life with three images. The Pilgrim was delighting in these, also as they were precious to behold because of their maker. This means the current insight should be connected to this discovery and established presence. How to combine the overall discovery with continuous new spiritual insight is directly building on this.<\/p>\n

Teleological: The meaning has to fit into the broader journey of the Soul from isolation towards the Heavens and the Divine. And the passage describes how to combine both what was just established, and, that one also has to take in new impressions. This would be an essential part of growth of the soul itself. Thus it is both relevant, and a good fit.<\/p>\n

Biographical: Dante himself went through a learning process, very likely exactly as described here. Discovering and opening to a new approach with a recursively generative foundation, and a foundation to come back to, while absorbing new insights to keep growing. This would fit as Dante describing and reflecting on his own journey and process in his mid-thirties to mid-forties.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/strong>: All the four tools fit well with the reading. Lifting the sights for new learning whilst remaining grounded in the established discoveries, gives good practical advice for the further anagogical journey. The method does not in this case directly produce<\/em> the insights, but it points towards them, and fully confirms that there are no contradictions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
