Based upon a new reading of the Garden of Eden by Richard Emerson in 2025, Paradiso could also in many ways be read differently than most commentaries, from their more literature-historical perspectives.
The poem is in its essence more like a practical guidebook and instruction manual for transformation and for reaching a new Union with God for the Reader. It is not primarily an description of doctrine and theology.
The essentials for the reading are:
The Pilgrim and Beatrice mostly operate as the Reader’s Consciousness and Soul, respectively. The Soul grows in capacity, and Consciousness grows and “updates” recursively in the relationship.
The Spheres add spiritual perceptions and capacities. A key for understanding the overall process is this:
- 1-3: Discover how the spiritual realm fills yourself, your life and the world you live in
- 4: Life as awakened spiritually and materially
- 5: Discovering your spiritual mission in life
- 6: Discovering the bigger picture, within which your mission plays an essential role
- 7: Discover the source of infinite spiritual energy
- 8: Understand Infinite Ιntelligence and a Touch of the Divine
On most pages you can ask yourself this: how does this relate to or matter for your own spiritual life and soul? What practically does this mean for you internally? This is the fastest way for the full transformation to take place.
And also, importantly:
Paradiso brings you to the Divine, but it does not stop there. It brings you to a new beginning and to a Life with God, after a Life Towards God. And this is in many ways the true Wonder of Dante’s Paradiso.
